The Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) is an international, feminist, membership organization committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women’s human rights. AWID’s mission is to strengthen the voice, impact and influence of women’s rights advocates, organizations and movements internationally to effectively advance the rights of women.

Areas of Work

AWID’s current strategic initiatives are: Resisting and Challenging Fundamentalisms, Influencing Development Actors and Practices for Women’s Rights, Where is the Money for Women’s Rights, Young Feminist Activism, Women’s Rights Information, and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs).

AWID’s Strategic Initiative to protect and support WHRDs has several components: international advocacy and alliance-building, sub-regional self-care and protection networks, knowledge-building and information-dissemination, mobilization and membership engagement in solidarity with WHRDs at risk.

Urgent Responses Offered

Urgent appeals, international solidarity and communication strategies

AWID disseminates urgent appeals produced by partner organizations through its website and electronic newsletters; facilitates the development of collective solidarity statements; and disseminates news items and statements regarding urgent situations. See the Take Action section of the website.

Advocacy with regional and international mechanisms

AWID supports women’s rights organizations in submitting communications about urgent situations to the UN Special Rapporteur on HRDs and other relevant mechanisms.
